Not too many travelers make their way to Savona when visiting Italy. Those that do usually go to see the Spiaggia. Other travel spots such as Genova and La Spezia may be more interesting to check out in the area but there is still a lot of interesting places to see and things to do in Savona.
Priamar Fortress
The Priamar Fortress is located near Rocca di San Georgio and was built in 1542 by the Genoese. The fortress was later also used as a prison for quite a lot of years and several important and well known patriots were imprisoned here in the past.
Cappella Sistina
The Cappella Sistina is located near the cathedral and was built in the 1480s. The chapel has a mausoleum that was built here by Pope Sixtus IV in honor of his parents. The chapel is built in a Rococo style and has hand painted ceilings. The 16th century carved wooden seats are also noteworthy.
Palazzo Della Rovere
The Palazzo Della Rovere is an old palace located close to the cathedral and is still left unfinished. It was first made as a palace and was later to be used as a university, which never happened and is still standing in its unfinished state.
The Old Towers
The old towers of the city are still standing intact even after centuries. There are about four to five towers that still exist and are located in different parts of the city. During the 16th century attack on the city when the rest of the towers and the walls had collapsed, these towers had survived.
Church of Nostra Signiora de Castello
The church of Nostra Signiora de Castello is quite interesting not because of its architecture but because of its interiors. The interiors are quite well decorated with several art works. The main attraction is the altar piece was designed by Vincenzo Foppa and was later painted in the 15th century. The other art works in the church are also quite interesting.
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy
The sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy is located 6 Km from the city and is an important religious place. The sanctuary is built at the place where Our Lady appeared to the shepherd. The church was built in 1536 and has a complete Baroque style of architecture which is quite noteworthy. The interior of the church is very beautiful and is hand painted by several noted artists and painters over the centuries.
Christopher Columbus's House
The residence of Christopher Columbus is located a few Km from the city and it is believed that Christopher Columbus had spent many years of his youth at this residence. The house is in the name of his father.
