More About Croatia

Croatia’s Dalmatian Islands are widely considered among the world’s most magnificent archipelagos. Conde Nast Traveler has even ranked Hvar among the top ten most beautiful islands. Their strategic location has drawn empires – from Greeks and Romans to Habsburgs and Ottomans. The Venetian navy once staked a claim here, as did Napoleon.

But really, who can blame anyone for coveting these jewels? Life slows down here, and your biggest decision is which toe to dip into Adriatic waters first. For a taste of a centuries-old heritage, peruse the piers of an old world fishing village. Nature lovers can coast past fields of rosemary and lavender, with dramatic coastal views. History buffs can browse medieval Nerezisca or explore Skrip, an ancient village dating to pre-Roman times – both on Brac. Or linger in the rustic, traditional mountain village of Pitve on Hvar.

National pride – for history and for heritage – is unbreakable here. Even after the civil strife of the 1990s, Croatian resilience and openness inspires visitors to embrace every nuance of their warm culture.

Croatia Dalmation Islands

Even these Dalmatian islands seem resilient: a floral abundance emerges from scarcity. On these primarily karst, white-stone landscapes, forests of evergreen and holm oak overlook the sea. And though fertile soils are sparse, and lakes and rivers difficult to find, underwater springs (and robust water conservation efforts) feed a rich crop of olives and fruit. Vineyards prosper here too, and produce memorable whites such as Prc and full-bodied reds like Plavac … perfect to accompany stews, goulashes, and all manner of seafood – from octopus to cuttlefish.

Positioning itself as 'the new Riviera', Croatia tourism is one of the hottest new European trends, offering a rich culture, ancient walled towns and castles, lush mountains, dazzling beaches with 1,000 islands to visit, a classic sunny Mediterranean climate, agreeable and relatively unspoilt people, good seafood and wines and all at a low price compared to most of Europe.

Croatia's coast and islands offer some good beaches, most water sports ranging from swimming or skinny dipping thru scuba diving, windsurfing and sailing.

Hikers, nature lovers and climbers have wide wilderness opportunities in the Velebit Range which includes Paklenica National Park, the canyons of Velika, Mala Paklenicathe and UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site of Plitvice Lakes, with its 16 turquoise lakes, numerous waterfalls, and spectacular karst [shapes and caves, but not peaks!] landscape.

Croatia also has ten Nature Parks, smaller and more individual than national parks, throughout the country such as Biokovo Mountain, Papuk Mountain and the unique wildlife area of Kopacki Rit, near Osijek, is worth visiting. .

Croatia is also a fine cycling country with numerous bike routes and easy rentals. There are many mountain biking tour specialists that organise both long and short tours around the country on the best routes.

Food and Wine

Croatian cuisine varies according to the region but the coastal area has historically been influenced by Greeks, Romans and Balkan dishes but today is dominated by Mediterranean styles, particularly Italian, with excellent pizzas, and fresh seafood. Inland has more of a typically heavy Hungarian, Viennese or Turkish flavour, spicy meat dishes served with roast potatoes or baked noodles, heavy soup and various home-made cheese.

Croatian wine is not yet world-class, but is coming along nicely. Red wines such as Kastelet, Babic, Plavac and Istrian Merlot are worth trying. Prosek traditional desert wine and Sljivovica plum brandy are well-known.

Tourism

With 10 million visitors a year currently, [2.7 million visitors in July 2011 alone], Croatia suffers a shortage of facilities at peak times - despite its fast developing tourist infrastructure, so book necessities well ahead.

Furthermore some short-sighted locals see the tourist boom as a chance to fleece any naive tourist within grasping range, so treat Croatia like the third world as far as money is concerned, checking bills carefully and negotiating taxis and other services with care.

Croatia

Croatia has an amazing 5,835km of coastline, 4,057km of which belongs to islands, cliffs and reefs. There are 1,185 islands in the Adriatic, but only about 50 are populated. The largest island is Krk (near Rijeka) which has a land area of 462 square km, whilst the country's other well known islands include Hvar, Brac, Korcula and Pag.

Croatia has been independent for only two decades and shares borders with Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro, while facing Italy across the Adriatic Sea.

There are currently only passenger ferry services from Italy to Croatia. Services from other European country's are planned but not yet active.

You can take ferries (or catamarans) to Croatia from the ports of Venice, Ravenna, Cesenatico, Rimini, Pesaro, Ancona, Termoli or Bari - which port you travel from depends on your destinatio in Croatia. Please click here to refer to ferry price check engine below for all the route options.
